Pool deck & patio coatings

Built for sun, bare feet and chlorine.

A pool deck in inland Southern California has a harder life than almost any other flat concrete on a property. It sits in full sun most of the year, it gets splashed with chlorinated water, and people walk on it barefoot. Those three things together rule out a lot of finishes that would be perfectly good indoors.

What works is a textured coating laid over the deck you already have — cool underfoot, grippy when wet, and pigmented with colors that will not fade out by the third summer. It goes down over the existing slab, so there is no demolition around the pool and no equipment working next to the coping.

What's included

  • Textured, cool-to-the-touch finishes built for full sun
  • Laid over the deck you already have — no tear-out
  • Slip resistance and comfort underfoot treated as the specification, not an extra
  • Pool surrounds, patios, splash pads and spa decks
  • Colors that hold up under inland California UV
  • Five years on material, one year on labor
Where it goes

Backyards, HOAs, schools and splash pads

The same system covers a single-family pool surround, an apartment complex deck that has to take constant traffic, a school splash pad with color work in it, and the patio and walkways that run off the deck. Keeping those areas in one finish is usually what makes a backyard read as finished rather than patched together.

We have been doing this work across Riverside, San Diego and San Bernardino counties since 1976, with our own crews on every job. Nothing about a pool deck is subcontracted.

Pool Deck & Patio Coatings questions

Will the deck still be too hot to walk on barefoot?

That is most of the point of the system. A textured cool-deck finish in a light color reflects a great deal more heat than bare gray concrete or a dark tile, and the texture puts air between your foot and the surface. Color choice matters here more than anywhere else on the property — we will steer you away from a dark tone that photographs well and then cooks all August.

My pool deck is cracked and stained. Does it have to come out?

Very rarely. Pool decks crack, and they stain from sun, chemicals and planters. Both are surface problems in almost every case. We chase and fill the cracks, prepare the slab and lay the new finish over the top. Tearing out a pool deck means working heavy equipment around a pool, which is expensive and usually unnecessary.

How slippery is it when wet?

Less than the smooth concrete or tile most decks start as. The texture is there for grip as much as for heat. We match the aggressiveness of it to who is using the deck — a family pool and a commercial or apartment deck are different specifications, and bare feet and older users both come into that.

Do you do commercial pool decks and splash pads?

Yes, and a lot of them — apartment complexes, schools, parks and HOA facilities. Splash pads bring their own requirements around color work and slip resistance, and we have done enough of them that the layout and the color separation are routine rather than an experiment on your site.
