Pool Deck Resurfacing Cost in Riverside and San Diego Counties

What it costs to resurface a cracked, faded or too-hot pool deck instead of tearing it out, what a cool deck repair involves, and why the old surface decides most of the price.

Sunlight raking across a freshly coated gray pool deck

A pool deck in inland Southern California has the hardest life of any concrete on the property. It sits in full sun for most of the year, it is splashed with chlorinated water, and it is walked on barefoot. By the time a homeowner calls us the deck is usually some combination of cracked, stained, faded and too hot to cross in August, and the question is whether it has to come out.

Almost always, it does not. Resurfacing keeps the slab, the footings and the drainage that already work and puts a new textured surface over the top. This guide covers what that costs across Riverside and San Diego counties, what a cool deck repair actually involves, and what moves the number.

The range you will meet

Across the region, a textured pool deck coating laid over an existing slab typically runs somewhere between three and ten dollars per square foot installed. The bottom of that range is a sound deck that needs cleaning, minor crack work and a new finish. The top is a deck with a failed coating that has to be removed, extensive cracking, or a decorative pattern and multiple colors.

A typical backyard deck of six hundred to a thousand square feet lands in the low-to-mid thousands. Commercial and HOA decks scale with their area but usually come in lower per square foot, because the fixed costs of mobilizing a crew are spread further.

Those are market figures, not a price list. We quote every deck on site, because the surface you have decides more of the number than the size does.

Resurfacing against replacement

This is the comparison that matters. Tearing out a pool deck means demolition, hauling the concrete away, forming and pouring new slabs, and a cure before anyone walks on it. It also means heavy equipment working around a pool and against the coping, which is where the expensive damage happens. It routinely costs several times what resurfacing does and takes weeks rather than days.

Resurfacing is the right call for the large majority of decks because pool deck problems are surface problems. Cracks, stains and heat are all dealt with from the top. The exception is a slab that has genuinely failed, heaving or settling badly, and if yours has we will tell you so rather than sell you a finish that fails with it. We covered how to tell the difference in resurfacing vs replacing concrete.

What a cool deck repair involves

A lot of decks across Temecula, Murrieta and Menifee were finished with a textured acrylic system when the pool went in. After fifteen or twenty summers that coating is chalky, patchy, delaminating at the edges and, where it was a darker color, hot. A cool deck repair is really a resurfacing job that starts with dealing with the old coating.

  • Assessment. Where the old coating is well bonded it can sometimes be cleaned and recoated. Where it is lifting, it has to come off, because a new finish over a failing one fails with it.
  • Removal where needed. Grinding the old system back to sound concrete. This is its own service for us, and it is the line that moves a quote the most.
  • Crack repair. Cracks are chased out, cleaned and filled. On a pool deck they are almost never structural, but they have to be treated or they telegraph straight through the new surface.
  • The new finish. A textured coating in a light tone that reflects heat and gives grip when wet, with the texture matched to who uses the deck. A family pool and an apartment complex deck are different specifications.
  • Color and pattern. Plain, banded, bordered, or scored into a tile or flagstone layout. Pattern adds labor, and it is where the top of the price range comes from.

We explained why a light textured surface stays cooler in pool deck too hot to walk on. The short version is that color choice matters more on a pool deck than anywhere else on the property.

The four things that move the price

What is on the deck now. Bare concrete is the cheapest starting point. A failed coating that has to be removed adds the most.

Cracking and damage. Every crack is time. Spalled patches and lifted edges need grinding and repair before the finish goes on.

Design. A single color knockdown texture is the base price. Borders, bands, contrasting coping and scored patterns all add labor and material.

Access and layout. A deck that wraps a freeform pool with steps, a raised spa and planters takes longer than a rectangle. Rock features and waterfalls beside the deck are a separate job, and it is the right moment to do them, as we wrote about in restoring faded faux rock.

Commercial and HOA decks

Apartment complexes, schools, parks and homeowners' associations make up a large part of our pool deck work. The economics are different: the areas are bigger, the slip-resistance specification is stricter, and the schedule usually has to fit around a season or a closure. Splash pads add multi-color layouts that have to be laid out and separated cleanly. If you manage a facility, the estimate is the place to bring the calendar, because phasing the work is normal for us.

How long it takes

A residential deck is typically a few days of work, with the biggest variable being how much removal there is at the start. Foot traffic comes back before furniture does, and we give you the real dates for your job and the weather that week rather than a brochure figure.

Get a number for your deck

The only way to price a pool deck properly is to look at it. Dave will tell you whether the old surface can be worked with or has to come off, what the cracks need, and what the number is for your deck. Estimates are free and on site across Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Common questions

How much does it cost to resurface a pool deck?

Across Riverside and San Diego counties, a textured coating over an existing deck typically runs between three and ten dollars per square foot installed, so most backyard decks land in the low-to-mid thousands. Whether an old coating has to be removed, how much cracking there is, and how much pattern and color work you want move the number inside that range.

Is it cheaper to resurface or replace a pool deck?

Resurfacing, by a wide margin. Replacement means demolition, hauling, new concrete and heavy equipment working around the pool. Resurfacing keeps the slab and puts a new surface on it. Replacement is only the right answer when a slab has genuinely failed, which is rare.

Can a cracked pool deck be resurfaced?

Almost always. Pool deck cracks are nearly always surface cracks rather than structural ones. They are chased out, cleaned and filled before the new finish goes on, and they do not come back through it.

Can you coat over my old cool deck?

Only if it is still well bonded. Where the old coating is lifting or chalking badly it has to come off, because a new surface over a failing one fails with it. Removal is priced as its own line so you can see what it costs.

How long before we can use the pool again?

A residential deck is usually a few days of work. Foot traffic returns first and furniture later, and we give you real dates for your job rather than a general figure, because cure times change with the weather.
